FAQ

Q?

I have never done any martial arts before, what classes can I attend?

A.

We have a special Fundamentals Programme that is tailored to the needs of beginners.  It’s a 16-week course that teaches the fundamental movements of BJJ, from self-defence to sport Jiu Jitsu.  If you want to learn the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu then this course is for you!  We provide a free, no obligation one-on-one introductory session to explain the programme (schedule you trial now), but for more information in the meantime, and a full breakdown of the benefits of our Fundamentals Programme, click here.

Q?

Will I need a Gi?

A.

You don’t need a gi initially as the techniques are easily adapted for no-gi training, therefore shorts and a t-shirt is fine to start with. If you’re going to stick at it though, you will need to get a gi.  The club can provide this.

Q?

How much is it?

A.

Training fees are paid by direct debit on the 1st of every month.  For more details contact us.  Don’t worry about fees until you’ve tried out your free trial. We’re sure you’ll see the benefits of BJJ.

Q?

Are private lessons better then group lessons?

A.

The two complement each other very well when used together. Both are very efficient and effective in your personal training. Private lessons allow you to learn more in-depth to your specific needs and allow for you to try techniques in a safe environment. Group lessons allow you to be challenged while working with other members. Group lessons allow for yourself to grow in live training. Starting with group lessons and moving  to private lessons to further your training is what most members would try. It depends on your level of comfort and how you prefer to train.

Q?

Is Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Safe?

A.

Yes! We try our best to create a safe, fun, and positive environment to train in. Members look out for each other to make sure the training is challenging but safe.

Q?

What should I bring to my first class?

A.

Intro Gi's will be provided for your first class, so all you need to bring is a bottle of water, rashguard or tight undershirt, and change of clothing (if necessary).

Q?

Do I need to be in good physical shape to join?

A.

No, Gracie Barra Jiujitsu is for anyone and everyone. The training itself will help get you into the shape you want to be. In BJJ you will work on your flexibility, strength, tequinique, and focus. So no matter what physical shape you could be in, it will only be helped by brazillian jiu jitsu.

Q?

I have training experience, can I skip the fundamentals classes and go straight to the advanced classes?

A.

No, we usually prefer if any member starts from the beginning just because we see, even at the highest levels of IBJJF competition (and certainly in MMA!) the submissions in black belt matches usually result from basic techniques like bow and arrow choke or straight armlock. And if you have ever rolled with a high level black belt you may have found yourself submitting to the basic cross collar choke from mount (a favorite of Roger Gracie against other world class blackbelts!).

How are they still able to submit black belts (who most certainly know the counters and defence) with these same basic techniques.

So, we prefer if everyone can start from the beginning to get the same amount of training in Gracie Barra Brazillian Jiujitsu as everyone else.
